No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for faster decisions, how the process works, and what to expect if you do not meet the criteria.

Numerous carriers have introduced expedited underwriting: for qualifying applicants below certain age and coverage thresholds, they make decisions based on your application, medication records, driving history and other databases instead of ordering an in-person exam. Many decisions arrive within hours. Each quote displayed here notes whether the carrier will require, possibly require or not require a physical exam.

What it changes

Waiving the exam does not bypass underwriting; your application is still scrutinized thoroughly. If you provide false information, the insurer can challenge the policy within the first 24 months. If the carrier's background check uncovers issues, they can still require an exam or lab tests, and you remain free to withdraw your application.

Who tends to qualify

Generally applicants under around 60 seeking coverage within the carrier's limits, with no serious health conditions and no tobacco or nicotine in at least the past year. If you've had a physician visit recently that included labs, several carriers will use those records instead of requiring their own exam.

Should the carrier require an exam, it typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes with a paramedic who visits your Chula Vista home or workplace, and it is complimentary. For applicants in good health, the exam results frequently yield a better rate class, so the exam often becomes an advantage rather than an inconvenience.
